Whether you’re trying to lose weight, maintain your current healthy weight, or just eat healthier in general, grazing on small portions of healthy snacks throughout the day will keep your blood sugar levels even and your metabolism engaged.

This is also a really great way to quit smoking without gaining weight, as part of breaking that habit is fulfilling the habitual hand-to-mouth action without picking up a cigarette. Instead of going for that second or third cup of coffee when it comes time for your mid-morning break at work, why not pick up an apple as a healthy snack?

Have you ever noticed that, by the time it gets to be lunchtime, you’re starving? Then you eat a ton, and you feel a “food coma” coming on by mid-afternoon. This happens because, by the time you get to eat lunch, your blood sugar has crashed. Then, feeling super hungry, you load up on a lot of calories all at once. After that, as your body processes them, you experience another blood sugar crash. It’s really a brutal cycle that puts your metabolism through the ringer, over and over again.

It’s time to break that cycle. Instead of letting your blood sugar crash and spike at different times in the day, keep it level by snacking on healthy snacks at work like fresh fruits and vegetables between meals.

Now, we’re not recommending that you add calories to your daily intake by eating healthy snacks. In fact, if you go to a grazing method, you may find that you consume fewer calories than you did before.

The key here is to pay attention to what your body is craving. If you have a sweet tooth, chow down on some fruits. If you’re feeling the need for something salty, drink a glass of water and take a bite out of some dark, leafy vegetables.

And don’t eat a huge meal at lunch or dinner. Keep those portions small, snack often on healthy snacks, and you’ll notice that your pants start fitting a lot looser in very short order.
